We were doing “military drill” in highschool. That’s when they forgot meat the sentry post.
It was midnight. My ribs meltedfrom the training. But where could you go,even if you wanted to?
I cursed my relief guard, during the secondtwo-hour shift. They played dominoesuntil midnight.
After the third two-hour shift, I thought of throwingmy weapon away. I never did it,of course.
Someone absolutely had to stayat the sentry post. The lot fell to me,as luck would have it...
So flowed the hours, the days, the monthsand the years. I was transformed, then, into a poster.
There came a time when children playedaround me. They threw snowballs at me,like a makeshift snowman.
I won’t speak of what I have sufferedand lost. I wasn’t the only one, forgotten at the sentry post.
Only that passerby stayed in my mind, the one who found me. “What are you doing there?!” he said.“There’s no more military drill!”
A tiny tear had escaped me, in themeantime. “I’m entertaining the children,” I told him.“I’ll stay just a little longer!”
