She passed along the white alley opposite,
Graceful, amid the innocent certainty of her beauty.
The day was golden and dense. The woman’s body
With every movement, left a void in the air,
In the exact shape of her body. Thus behind her
Remained a line of transparent statues, stretching away,
To the bend in the road where she vanished. Then
The day emptied at once. The shutters came down at the flower shop,
While the transparent, naked statues turned to marble
To the edge of the horizon like a row of trees
And a fine rain began to fall upon their marble shoulders.
